Joe Welch was awarded the 2020 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Award by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Welch was chosen amongst 12 finalists to receive this award.
Mr. Welch was also awarded the National History Teacher of the Year Award by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in 2018. As the 2020 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year, COVID paused Welch's responsibility to work with teachers throughout PA to look at ways to improve instruction but in 2022 he represented Pennsylvania in the National Teacher of the Year competition at the White House. Welch was one of 4 finalists selected for the National Teacher of the Year award. Congratulations Joe Welch! North Hills High School German Teacher Joe Deible
2019 Extra Yard for Teachers Award Recipient In addition to the 2019 Extra Yard for Teachers Award recipient in 2020 he received AATG Checkpoint Charlie National Award, for teaching cultural understanding.
The North Hills World Language Department has received PSMLA PEP awards for exemplary programs for the past ten years. As the World Language curriculum leader he oversaw the progression of the department from Bronze Globe to Gold Globe award status with PSMLA. Joe has been the German Club sponsor since 2003. Through the German Club Joe as chaperoned over 300 NH students and parents in Europe. Increasing his students cultural knowledge about Europe. In 2010 he founded the German National Honor Society. He is also the sponsor of Future Teachers of America, AFS International Club, the former sponsor of the Environmental Club, Chess Club, and the Judo Club. These clubs have raised more than $100,000 for charitable causes, including Children's Hospital, NH Pantry, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, About the Warrior, Crohn's Foundation, Animal Friends, and Angel's Place. Middle School Teacher Libby Gasior Named Coach of the YearLibby Gasior was named 2020-21 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) coach of the year for softball. Coach Gassior led the Lady Indians to a 18-6 record last season, winning their first WPIAL title since 2000.
Anthony Burns Named the NHL & NHLPA’s Most Valuable TeacherIn January of 2021 Anthony was named the Most Valuable Teacher, he wass chosen out of 20 educators from across the NHL. Each teacher was selected for their use of the NHL and NHLPA-sponsored Future Goals program, which teaches students key STEM skills using interactive gameplay and real-world scenarios.

North hills Middle school social studies teacher selected as James madison fellowLarry Dorenkamp earned a James Madison Fellowship which recognizes outstanding history teachers and gives them a opportunity to further their craft.
Mr. Dorenkamp is one of 53 people selected from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and territories of the United States. The fellowship also awards a $24,000 scholarship to Mr. Dorenkamp to help pay for his master's degree in American History and Government. Michelle Kress was awarded a $1900 grant from the Society for Analytic Chemists of Pittsburgh to acquire Cue Robots to add to the robot fleet at McIntyre. The robots will be used this school year as an enrichment tool for students as they learn to write and interact with code.
David Barkovich has over 20 years of experience with removing barriers to a student's education as a school counselor at North Hills High School in Pittsburgh, PA. Previous to this, David was employed as an Admission and Financial Aid Counselor at the University of Pittsburgh. David has earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership, Master's Degree in Psychology in Education, Bachelor's Degree in Communication Rhetoric, K-6 and 7-12 school counseling certificate, principal's certification, certification as a supervisor of curriculum and instruction, and has been a National Board Certified Teacher (School Counseling) since 2010. David is a member of the ASCA, PSCA, Allegheny County School Counseling Association (past-president), NACAC, and PACAC. David resides in Pittsburgh, PA with his wife and daughter.
https://www.paschoolcounselor.org/post/dream-plan-do Ross Teacher Buzz Gabos Named Coach of the YearCoach Gabos led the boys varsity basketball team to a regular season record of 24-0 finish atop of 6A section 1 and making it to the WPIAL Championship game. The team also advanced to the Elite 8 of the PIAA ^A tournament, the most successful in school history. Six of Coach Gabos players earned Big 56 All-Section honors and Coach Gabos was named the 2022 Big 56 Boys' Basketball Coach of the Year in 6A Section 1.
